51±¾É«sends refunds to eligible Vonage customers
The 51±¾É«is sending payments totaling more than $99.4 million to 389,106 people who tried to cancel or were charged fees after cancelling their Vonage account. The 51±¾É«sued internet phone service provider Vonage, and the company agreed to settle.
According to the FTC, Vonage made it easy for customers to sign up for phone plans but very difficult to cancel. Customers often had to contact Vonage multiple times, speak to multiple agents, and listen to multiple sales pitches before they could cancel their service. Customers that succeeded in canceling were sometimes charged unexpected fees or had additional charges added to their accounts without their permission. The settlement required Vonage to pay money to provide refunds, make it easy and simple to cancel, and stop charging customers without their consent.
